Zalakaros Spa heats its buildings with thermal water

In the spirit of sustainability, the Zalakaros Spa is switching to geothermal heating

Zalakaros Spa has built a geothermal energy network with a budget of almost HUF 200 million. The system was officially inaugurated on 08 September 2023. The water from the D 6 well is used to generate gas energy. The 96°C water, which emerges from a depth of more than 2,000 metres, has so far been cooled by cold water at a depth of 40 metres. The new system is designed to prevent the precipitation of scale at the latter depth by adding a special agent to prevent the water from precipitating, and thus to ensure that the water arrives at 85-90 degrees Celsius. Soft water is now circulated through a heat exchanger in the system, which is connected to the boiler to heat the buildings. The energy network is capable of replacing 200-250 thousand cubic metres of gas.

At the ceremony, Andor Végh, CEO of Zalakaros Spa Ltd., said that the solution to the energy crisis is to become independent from fossil energies. Geothermal energy means unlimited and continuous energy profit, with it Zalakaros Spa can be reborn. The CEO thanked his predecessors for their work, as it was the solid foundation they had built that made this investment possible. He also thanked the owners and all the staff of the spa, whose support and cooperation helped to make the project a success.

According to Ferenc Novák, the mayor of Zalakaros, the unique thermal water has healed millions of people and is now used to replace gas energy. Environmental awareness and sustainability is a priority for the future. .

Szabolcs Juhász, Director of Tourism of the Hungarian Tourism Agency also praised the development. According to Dr. Attila Pál, President of the Zala County Assembly, Zalakaros is a leader in rational thinking, it does not wait for external help, this investment is a true reflection of the future of the town and the spa.

Unfortunately, Bálint Nagy, Member of Parliament for the region, was unable to attend the event due to other commitments, but in his letter he wrote that the investment in the spa is exemplary and forward-looking, and the whole region can be proud of it.
